Just do it?

Hi, it’s Tom again

Last weekend I had to choose where I wanted to live next year and, being at the top of the room ballot had a lot of choice, I think I got one of the best rooms in college.

Choosing which one to go for was difficult but in the end went for in one in a house. It has an amazing view of the garden, is huge and comes with a settee. Even better is the kitchen/dining area just outside that I will be able to share with my friends on the same floor. However, choice means you have decide where you compromise and the library is further away, as is the “porters lodge”, where post goes and the “garden restaurant”, aka college cafeteria. So is choice bad? I don’t think so but it does make you consider what really matters to you.

Making choices is hard no matter how big or small they are as you have to decide on what is important to you. However, while thinking about what to write on this blog post I realised that the decisions that often require a lot of thought like choosing a room or making a decision about which chocolate bar to buy (that might just be me) tend not to be that significant in the long run.

Instead, it’s the everyday things that we just do without considering that are really important. Like: watch TV or socialise with friends. Read about the latest developments in science or just chill to music. Procrastinate or write the essay. When to set the alarm clock to get up – 7am to run or 8.30am for more sleep. It’s these everyday decisions that define us. And at University, you have far more freedom of choice than ever before.

I think since coming to university I have spent more time considering what I am doing with my time because there are far more demands on it. And have realised that there is a balance to strike; at times it is important to recognise that you often just do these things because you enjoy them. So I would advocate considering how you spend each day but, perhaps even more critically, having done so follow Nike’s advice and
