Most students are familiar with Kumar and Clark’s Clinical Medicine; this textbook is a useful adjunct focussed on acute medical problems and is conveniently cross-referenced to the parent text. The book discusses the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical features and acute management of common diagnoses in the context of case studies and each chapter ends with a series of helpful self-assessment questions. The illustrations are one of the strengths of this textbook. For example, chest x-rays for a range of problems are clearly explained with the use of accompanying diagrams. As a quick reference book, some may find the layout of the text frustrating because it does not use consistent headings but the level of detail is appropriate for students preparing for final examinations. Overall, Acute Clinical Medicine is a useful book to have in any senior medical students bag when they are on take.
