I absolutely love this book. I put off buying a Davidson's for 3 years, having bought Kumar and Clarke and Medicine and Surgery first, but I wish I'd bought this earlier as well. The book is very well set out and beautifully in context. I would recommend this book to any clinical medical student out there, or in fact anyone who simply wants to understand things in more context!

Well layed out, with just the right amount of tables and images to break up the text. For a small book it contains a huge amount of information. Great for dipping in-and-out of, or for making notes from. A much less intimidating version of the big Davidson's or Kumar and Clark, contains the salient points that you need without having the read pages and pages of the big book to get the same information.

I give this book a buyer rating of 5/5. Okay, so I’m pretty happy walking along with my Baby Kumar and Clark and all is right with the world. The out of nowhere, I get handed Baby Davidson’s; a present! And suddenly the world is unbalanced. For everyone knows that you’re either a Kumar and Clark guy or a Davidson’s guy. But now that I have both I guess the decent thing would be to review them. To be entirely frank it’s just as good as Baby Kumar and Clark which is amazing. But it also includes more colour images which, is a bonus as are the clinical examination summary diagrams at the start of every chapter (just beautiful) and it’s also a tad bigger (possibility of having more information there), doesn’t fit into pockets as easy though. The actual format is again brilliant as is the content. Brilliantly organised and so easy to just glide through and the countless diagrams again just ease the learning. If you prefer Mummy Davidson’s then get this for the ward. Its familiarity is priceless. Enjoy, Latifa (“,)

This is a condensed version of the big Davidson's textbook and I was really impressed with the content of the book. As handbooks go, the benchmark has to be the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine and I think Essentials of Medicine does a good job. Having used both books, the Oxford Handbook definitely has a greater breadth but at the cost of being frequently superficial. This is where Essentials of Medicine comes into its own because it covers the stuff you'll see more frequently in a more satisfactory depth. What's more is that Essentials of Medicine seems to take only the best bits of Davidson's - the content is selected by junior doctors and it's far more readable and best of all - concise! It's also ideal for PBL - during the session and even for answering ILOs! The book also has a chapter on OSCE stations (although far from comprehensive) and therapeutics. And throughout it is very well illustrated. This book can be bought for about £20 and at that sort of price is excellent value - it's an ideal book for quick reference and an excellent companion to the Oxford Handbook.

This book is great for summarising the essentials, particularly for quick references and PBL. It has all the main information for clinical studies and is very concise. Although the larger Davidson's textbook is more detailed this book is great for carrying about more easily!

Editor’s Note

About the Editor: Introducing: Alastair Innes, editor of Davidson's Essentials of Medicine Edinburgh born and trained, Alastair has done his fair share of working in other great cities Newcastle, London and even Los Angeles. But it would seem that all roads lead to Edinburgh where Alastair returned to his present job as a chest physician in 1993. He has special interests in lung physiology and cystic fibrosis, and is involved in the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium research programme. There’s no rest for the busy and Alastair has a very full life outside of work enjoying music, sailing and tinkering with anything, especially his 35 year old Triumph TR6, which he bought second hand as a houseman. He is also married with three children but still finds time to edit books, for which we at the Naked Truth are very grateful! Alastair told us that ‘’The Davidson’s Essentials project was a real challenge; as a Scot I like the idea of “distilling” the information in the parent book into something that packs value (and punch) into a small and portable format. What better than sitting in a comfy chair by the fire with Essentials? – after all it is lighter than a laptop!’’ Take a look at a sample chapter of the book above and let us know what you think. Enjoy!
