Ophthalmology is a subject that doesn’t seem to be covered very often at medical school. I decided to take the Duke Elder Eye exam and used this book as my primary textbook. The book itself has a very high quality of content, with large number of pictures which I think particularly in ophthalmology is very important. My main criticism of the book was it wasn’t very readable. In theory the way it is set out (definition, signs and symptoms etc) should have made it very clear and easy to read, but I found it quite a slog to get through. That said the information in the book was very good and of a high quality. I found the diagrams in the first chapter on ocular anatomy and physiology very clear and descriptive. I think the level of knowledge in the book is probably above what we would need to know as an undergraduate and as such I probably wouldn’t recommend it to someone unless they had an interest in ophthalmology as a career
