I find that gynaecology is quite well covered at my university, however this is a nice book to aid my understanding. I am sure this book would be very useful to people that had a hard time learning from lectures as this book is very detailed and full of diagrams. There are also photographs showing some of the more common conditions. You probably won't use this whole book in medical school. Some of the things are only relevant if you are thinking of specialising in Obs and Gynae. So I would recommend that you check this book out from your library instead of buying it unless you have a special interest in Gynaec or are going to focus on Gynaecology in any of your in-course assignments.

Content: I used this textbook as a revision aid. I don’t recommend using it solely to cover obs and gynae, but using it in addition to other textbooks is the best approach. The book covers all the main topics such as anatomy, pathology, some histology and some physiology for obs and gynae. In addition there is also focus on the surgical and clinical aspects to this specialty with information such as clinical features, investigations, examinations and treatment of pathologies. Therefore the textbook covers the basis of this specialty and is quite concise and emphasises the main points to learn. Furthermore the best thing about the book is that it contains lots of diagrams and pictures, and people like me who are visual learners will appreciate this. Layout/Presentation: The layout of the book is quite simple, it isn’t too cluttered or the text isn’t too small. In addition the textbook is all in black and white. Each page of the book has a clear heading and subheadings making it easy to navigate through the book. All in all I find this book easy to read and aesthetically pleasing to the eye without being overwhelmed with information on each page like some books. Pros: Without a doubt the numerous diagrams in the textbook make this book really stand out from the others as they are very helpful in further understanding the text and make it very clear. Cons: The textbook lacks the use of many real images such as photographs, and mostly comprises of black and white images which have been drawn. I think that if this book would be even better if it was in colour. Overall: In conclusion I feel that this book is ideal for medical students as it is at an appropriate depth and level of knowledge and contains the basics of obs and gynae. I highly recommend this book as I think that this is an essential book that people should refer to, to get a better understanding of the various obs and gynae pathologies as they are all very well illustrated; something which not all textbooks do very well.
