Alessandro Aldera, University of Cape Town

This is a superb histology textbook. Most other histology texts focus on histological structure and are laden with photomicrographs. Kierszenbaum however integrates all the subjects (e.g. physiology, biochemistry, pathology) that relate to a particular topic into one neat, concise package - making this book ideal for PBL. The book covers cell biology and basic tissues in the first few chapters, followed by a look at all the organ systems in subsequent chapters. Illustrations, tables, schematic diagrams as well as photomicrographs are generously scattered throughout the text making it highly readable. Excellent summaries at the end of each chapter are ideal for quick revision before exams. Large, full-colour figures complement each section of text and aim to improve understanding and present relevant information pictorially. The text is beautifully clear and simple and the aim is for understanding the concepts as they are relevant to clinical medicine. I read this book cover to cover and actually enjoyed it! If you are looking to read one histology textbook, let the Kierszenbaum be it!

...The book is good all round. It seems very comprehensive in its coverage of normal histology, but it certainly goes much further: it has some simple explanations of physiology and some pathology. As well as introducing histology, it was quite a useful companion to the work in the systems blocks, as it gives a good overview of many things we (in Dundee) cover...

I love the bright colours and the simple pictures. This textbook is one of the best I have seen in years. It is easy to read and appeals to my simple mind which finds pathology really boring! The clinical relevance also helps as it reminds me why I am studying this quite dull subject at times. The online access is great too as I don’t have to spend hours copying diagrams into my notes!
